The Optometric Assistant/Ophthalmic Technician is directly responsible for providing direct patient care and performing administrative duties in the Eye Clinic Department. This is a union position.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Performs all pretesting requirements for the eye doctor. This includes but is not limited to the following tests: Visual acuity, Color vision testing, Confrontational visual fields, Extraocular movements, Pupillary reactions, Stereopsis, Assessing binocular function, Lensometry, Autorefraction, and Vision Therapy
- Performs ancillary testing when ordered by the eye doctor. This includes but is not limited to the following: Fundus Photos, Visual fields, Optical Coherence Tomography, Pachymetry, Topography, Meibomography, Pupilography, Blood pressure and Tonometry.
- Answers and returns patient phone calls.
- Updates and manages medication logs, temperature logs, and maintenance logs.
- Schedules appointments and completes appointment reminder calls.
- Manages inventories and orders supplies for the Eye Department.
- Assists with prior authorizations of medications and glasses.
- Assists with insurance questions or eligibility.
- Helps to manage patient flow in the Eye Clinic.
- Completes all patient care documents in a timely manner.
- Performs miscellaneous tasks as assigned by the Eye Clinic Director.
- Participates in community vision screenings and outreach programs.
- Attends continuing education events for Optometric Assistants and maintains current certification.
- Applies principles of aseptic techniques for infection control and follows safety procedures and incidence protocols.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND COMPETENCIES:
- Background in medical/science-related field and knowledge of optometry/ophthalmology terminology
- Experience working in a healthcare setting.
- CPO certification or ability to pass the Paraoptometric Assistant (CPO) certification within one year of employment.
- Experience and competence in working with people of diverse backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, races, origins, and beliefs.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative.
- Can easily adapt to unexpected changes in scheduling and examination.
- Works well in a team environment within the eye department and the larger medical clinic.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Can multitask with attention to detail.
- Ability to adapt to unexpected changes in scheduling and examinations
Highly Desirable Competencies:
- Optometric Assistant certification (CPO, CPOA, or CPOT).
- Fluency in Spanish.
- Experience working in an eye care setting.
- Experience working with a diverse population or an FQHC.
