The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) is responsible for the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered reproductive, prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, and primary care services to patients of Axis. The CNM functions as an independent and collaborative member of the multidisciplinary health care team, practicing within the scope of Certified Nurse Midwife licensure and in accordance with Minnesota statutes, regulations, and Axis policies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides comprehensive midwifery and primary care services within the scope of Certified Nurse Midwife practice and in collaboration with physicians and other members of the care team as appropriate.
- Maintains clinical expertise and competency (including age-specific and population-specific competency) and demonstrates thorough knowledge of procedures required to deliver high-quality midwifery and primary care services.
- Provides scheduled clinical sessions at Axis clinic sites, including extended hours clinics as needed.
- Full-time CNMs provide services during at least nine (9) clinics per week (each clinic is four hours), negotiated based on required administrative time. Provides a minimum number of patient encounters per contract year (TBD). Serves in an administrative capacity a minimum of four (4) hours per week. Clinics and administrative hours are prorated based on FTE.
- Performs comprehensive assessments; examines, diagnoses, treats, and manages patients across the lifespan with a focus on reproductive, prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, gynecologic, and primary care services, as defined in individual employment agreements.
- Prescribes pharmaceuticals, medications, contraceptives, and treatment regimens as appropriate and within licensure and regulatory authority.
- Orders, interprets, and reviews laboratory tests, imaging, and diagnostic studies; makes timely and appropriate medical management decisions and referrals.
- Refers patients for specialty care and ancillary services as clinically indicated and ensures coordination and continuity of care.
- Provides continuity of care to Axis patients on their assigned panel and other patients as assigned, including prenatal, postpartum, and well-person care.
- Maintains accurate, timely, and problem-oriented health records in accordance with Axis Information Management policies and procedures.
- Leads and collaborates with the health care team to identify, evaluate, and prioritize patient and family needs and to develop individualized plans of care.
- Educates patients and family members on diagnoses, treatment plans, preventive care, pregnancy, birth, postpartum care, and overall health and wellness.
- Participates in health promotion, education, and prevention programs, including community-based and culturally responsive initiatives.
- Attends and participates in clinic, departmental, and organizational meetings as required.
- Demonstrates the ability to relate to the public regardless of racial, ethnic, linguistic, or economic status.
- Provides clinical care in alignment with Axis policies and under collaborative agreements as required by state regulation.
- Assumes responsibility and accountability for delegating, directing, and supervising patient care activities; trains, mentors, and supervises students and support staff as appropriate.
- Participates in the analysis of community health needs and assists in the development and implementation of community health care plans, particularly related to maternal, perinatal, and reproductive health.
- Participates in Continuous Performance Improvement (CPI), quality assurance, and risk management activities.
- Participates in the review and development of patient care policies, protocols, standing orders, and health maintenance schedules.
- Implements approved plans, procedures, and protocols for the medical and midwifery team.
- Serves as a resource, mentor, and positive leader within the department.
- Maintains current knowledge of healthcare trends, evidence-based practice, and regulations impacting midwifery and primary care practice.
- Participates in the evaluation of products, procedures, and patient care standards.
- Maintains professional courtesy at all times and strict confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA and PHI regulations.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Required
- Knowledge of advanced principles of midwifery care, reproductive health, prenatal and postpartum care, and health promotion
- Knowledge of clinical protocols and the ability to quickly learn Axis operational procedures
- Knowledge of medical terminology and appropriate documentation standards
- Demonstrated knowledge of Minnesota statutes and regulations governing Certified Nurse Midwife practice
- Ability to document patient care clearly, accurately, and comprehensively
- Ability to effectively present information to patients, families, staff, and community groups
- Ability to use standard office and clinical equipment, including electronic health records, telephones, and copiers
Preferred
- Bilingual providers with cultural competency preferred (Somali, Oromo, Amharic)
Credentials and Experience
Required
- Graduate degree from an accredited Certified Nurse Midwife program
- Current, unrestricted Certified Nurse Midwife licensure in the State of Minnesota
- National certification as a Certified Nurse Midwife (AMCB)
- Compliance with continuing education requirements as mandated by licensing and certifying bodies
- Current DEA, NPI, and other required certifications to practice in Minnesota
- Hospital privileges at designated hospitals if required by scope or service line
- Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Healthcare Professionals certification
Preferred
- At Least one (1) year of practice experience providing direct patient care
Special Requirements
The employee must be able to lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye/hand coordination. Requires sitting, standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. Requires frequent exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The ability to work with a moderate noise level in the work environment is required.
